Frequently asked questions
What is the effective tax rate?
Your effective rate is your total tax divided by your gross income. It is lower than your marginal rate. That is because each part of your income is taxed at the rate for the band it falls in. Your whole salary is not taxed at your top rate.
Is my salary taxed at one flat rate?
No. Malaysia has 10 bands. The first RM5,000 is not taxed at all. Only the part of your income that falls in a band is taxed at the rate for that band. Take someone who earns RM100,000. They pay nothing on the first RM5,000, then 1% on the next RM15,000, and so on. The last RM30,000 is taxed at 19%.
What is the difference between relief and rebate?
A relief lowers your chargeable income before we work out your tax. A rebate comes off the tax bill itself, one ringgit at a time. The RM9,000 individual relief, for example, lowers your taxable income by RM9,000. The RM400 rebate is different. If your chargeable income is RM35,000 or less, RM400 comes straight off the tax you owe.

What is the monthly PCB estimate?
PCB is short for Potongan Cukai Bulanan. It is the tax your employer takes out of your pay each month. Our estimate is just your tax for the year divided by 12. Your employer may take out a different amount. They use the official LHDN PCB schedule, and they allow for when you were paid and for any allowances you get.
